Keyboard on rent or buy one? An honest guide for learners

Rent a keyboard for the first one or two weeks to see if the lessons stick (from ₹1,800 a week for the Casio MD 150, ₹5,000 for the Casio CT-X870IN). If you're still playing after a month, buying usually works out cheaper than renting.

Should you rent a keyboard for your child's classes, or just buy one? We rent keyboards, so it would be easy to say "rent". The honest answer depends on how long you'll need it.

What renting costs

ItemPer dayWeek15 daysDeposit
Keyboard – Casio MD 150₹500₹1,800₹3,500₹3,000
Keyboard – Casio CTK-810IN (with Stand)₹1,000₹4,500₹8,500₹12,000
Keyboard – Casio CT-X870IN (with Stand)₹1,200₹5,000₹9,000₹15,000

The CT-X870IN and CTK-810IN come with stands. The MD 150 is a compact, inexpensive way for beginners and children to start.

Renting vs buying, in numbers

Take the Casio CT-X870IN. One online music store lists it at ₹13,499 (October 2026; prices vary). Renting it costs ₹5,000 for a week or ₹9,000 for 15 days.

So 15 days of rent is already about 67% of the price of buying. Renting makes sense for a trial, a short course or a one-off programme. For year-round lessons, buying is the better deal.

  • Rent if you're not sure the lessons will last, you need it for a school programme or exam, or you're in Hyderabad for a few weeks.
  • Rent first, then buy, if the learner is a child who might lose interest. A week tells you a lot.
  • Buy straight away if the learner has already been playing on a borrowed or school keyboard and is committed.

Which keyboard to start with

For a young child's first weeks, the Casio MD 150 (₹500 a day, ₹1,800 a week) keeps the cost of a trial low. For older learners and anyone following a teacher's syllabus, the 61-key CT-X870IN or the CTK-810IN (both come with stands) are closer to what they'll practise on long term.

The same logic for guitar and violin

Many parents rent a violin (₹2,000 a week) or an acoustic guitar (₹2,000 a week) for a few weeks before buying for their child. Trying it first is cheap; buying an instrument that sits in a cupboard isn't.
